Mayas and Aztecs loved it for jewelry and used it also for mosaics and religious cults.
It was named “Quetzalitzlipyollitli“, which means“ Stone of the Bird of Paradise“.
In Tibet and northern India turquoise is especially important, both as a form a currency and a beautiful jewelry.
Ladies wear headdresses known as perak with many turquoise beads sewn on.
These perak headdresses are quite heavy and opulent displays of social status which literally stored a woman’s wealth.
The valuable stones and jewelry attached were her own, and not part of her husband’s property – she had the power to barter with the stones and jewelry as needed to provide for her family.
These earrings are in 925 silver.
